Richardson has a diverse set of parks that are a great asset for our city. I have wonderful memories of these parks from when I was a kid. I enjoyed playing on the “Franken-Robot” in Huffhines Park, and sliding down the rocket ship slide at Heights Park. As a teenager, I spent every summer day riding my bike around Breckinridge Park. As an adult, I can still appreciate the value these parks bring to our city. The park amenities have changed over time, but the thing these parks represent has stayed the same; opportunity.
There are the obvious opportunities the parks provide. They give us a chance to exercise and play. Whether they’re used as a practice facility for our kid’s sports teams, or a nice place for us to jog and relax from our daily grind, it’s easy to see the recreational value of our parks and trails.
One place where we as a city can improve, is using our parks to bring our community closer together. We have our once yearly festivals at various parks, but that’s not enough to really bring the citizens closer together. What if we had monthly gatherings at the parks? I’m not talking about big events like the festivals. I’m talking about events that would cost the city almost nothing to hold and promote.
For example, we could have a monthly astronomy night that meets at Breckinridge Park. People can bring and share telescopes. How much fun would that be for our kids to get a close-up view of the next comet fly by? How many people know that you don’t need a high powered telescope to see the moons of Jupiter?
We could have weekly jogging and exercising groups that meet at various parks. Some people like to have a group they can meet and exercise with. Why can’t the city put forth the minimal effort it would require to promote these groups?
It’s easy to see that there is a lot we can do as a city to better utilize our parks. I’ve listed just a couple ideas here, but there are many more just waiting to be started. While these ideas promote better health and learning opportunities, I see a greater value to the city. To me, the greatest benefit would be a stronger community. When people attend these events, they’ll get to know each other better. Through shared interests and just showing up to the same events, we’ll get to know our neighbors better. We can make this happen.
